Snitches Get Stitches. Saturday, May 13th 0917hrs

My guards were silent most of the way back through the prison, but as we neared C Wing, Prison Officer Markham could hold his tongue no longer.

‘You really think there could be guards involved in Hyde’s murder?’

They were both behind me, and I didn’t bother to turn around when I replied, ‘How did the golem get in and out of the prison multiple times? How did he enter a passageway and never come out the other end? If we dismiss the notion that he is a supernatural manifestation and thus able to defy the laws of this planet, then either someone is opening doors for him, or someone is doctoring the camera footage. Whichever it is, the prisoners are not doing it. That leaves …’

‘The guards,’ Markham filled in the blank space I left for him and lapsed back into silence.

It was only when we came through the final gate and back into C Wing that I spoke again.

‘Can you arrange for me to speak with the witnesses again, please?’

I’d been running different ideas through my head, trying to work out how I could get some kind of handle on this case. I was certain there was someone inside the maximum-security wing who was benefitting from the golem’s appearance. The good money was on Henry Featherstone – the guvnor. I abridged the word and said it with a dirty, cockney accent in my head because it felt right to do so. He controlled the drug trade in and out, but was this about drugs? Calling Amanda or Jane and getting them to look into Prison Officer Hyde’s past might yield what he was up to, but I was going to do this without involving my friends on the outside if I could.

I still suspected Yardley. He was the one hampering my attempts to investigate, and according to Markham, he was the only person able to authorise cell doors being opened and closed outside of normal operations. Would anyone question him if he went into the control room and fiddled with something?

Probably not. And it wouldn’t show up on a log anywhere because the system was too old for that.

When I got to speak with Spider Murphy, Kev the Knuckle, and the others the first time, Yardley had been right there. I remember them glancing across the room, but I hadn’t paid enough attention to see whether the senior guard was controlling what they said and giving them a warning glare.

Maybe if I could get them alone again now, I could wheedle out of them what they actually saw.

To my request, Markham said, ‘I’ll see what I can do.’

Soliman revolted. ‘What? You’re going to help him? He’s trying to prove the guards are dirty!’

‘But what if they are?’ countered Markham, trying to get his partner to see sense. ‘What if Michaels is bang on the money and there is someone in the guards behind Hyde’s death? What if it’s
